cgChick wrote:So I post that I want to write fics over the weekend and what does my computer do? Die on Saturday morning. The logic board fried on my laptop, thus converting it into the world's most expensive paperweight. After some sobbing and blubbering at the Apple Store they took it in to be fixed and should have it back to me by the end of the week. Sorry I didn't post anything when I said I would, hopefully I can make up for it in the next couple of weeks once I get my poor computer back. Just wanted to let you guys know since I didn't want to leave you hanging.
I feel your pain soooo badly. I just got a new computer to replace the old one which was on the verge of death. Just in time too, it completely died on me on day two after getting the new one set up. I hope yours is working perfectly when it gets back to you.

Title: The Talk
Challenge Prompt: Starting over (January prompt)
Summary: Lavie finds herself reflecting on recent changes
Characters: Claus, Lavie
Other: Takes place right at the start of Fam
Pairing: Claus/Lavie
Other: Partially inspired by an episode of the new anime Golden Time (highly recommended, it's hilarious)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The past month had brought about great change in the home of Lavie Head and Claus Valca. Alvis had left with Dio after the repeated threats against her safety proved too much for the two of them to handle, especially with Claus' current condition. Holly had left as well for a trip back to visit her mother on Prester, hopping aboard one of the Exile's final runs for the year back to their original home world. She wouldn't be back again for about 6 months. This left just Claus and Lavie alone in their home, back to the way things had been before their adventures aboard the Silvana two years prior.

Lavie had figured the two of them would settle back into the routines they had been used to back when they were 15, but that ended up not being the case. First and foremost was Claus' injury, which had switched their dynamic up greatly. Whereas before Claus was the one to tend to the fields and do repairs around the house, Lavie now took care of those chores. To Lavie's relief Claus had taken over the cooking and some of the cleaning, although laundry was still left to her. Then of course there was the physical therapy and frequent doctors visits that both of them had to deal with.

Claus's lower leg bones had been shattered by by Dio's bullets when they had engaged each other in aerial combat a few months prior, and for awhile the doctors thought they would have to amputate. Fortunately that didn't happen, but the result was Claus needing experimental treatment from from the military doctors who were used to dealing with wounded veterans. Their hope was to try and save his shattered leg bones with internal screws and rods so that he would be able to walk again. It was difficult for Claus though, for the treatments were numerous, and he was still a growing boy. The treatments were also horrifically painful. Presently the physical therapy for Claus took up a sizable portion of their day, and as a result certain things began to fall by the wayside, such as maintenance for the vanship.

Yes, there were a lot of changes that were happening very rapidly in their lives. Lavie had thought they had all started over when they first landed on Earth, but as she was discovering, they were actually starting over right now. The fundamental roles for the two of them were changing. Their personalities were changing as well.

When they were younger aboard the Silvana, and even after they had first landed on Earth, Lavie had wondered if Claus could be interested in her as anything more than a close friend or a sister. For quite awhile she had wondered if Claus even noticed women the same way she noticed men. She would get jealous of course when he would visit with Tatiana, but as she grew older she began to realize that Claus didn't see Tatiana as anything more than a good friend. This made Lavie wonder if Claus had any leanings towards romantic proclivities at all. Or if he was gay. She had been unsure until her questions were jarringly put to rest when she decided to wash the sheets on all the beds and accidentally stumbled upon a small box filled with titty mags in Claus' room. Lavie was completely stunned to say the least. Who knew that mild mannered, shy, quiet, complacent Claus Valca would have a small collection of porn? Yes, he was a male and it made sense given his age but still...Claus had a porn stash? Really? Even more perplexing, just where in the hell did he get it from? He certainly didn't have a subscription for it, she would've picked up on that from the mail. Nope, the best she could guess was that he had picked up the issues in town or in Prester before he received his injury. And to top it off, there was an single, dust-covered, unopened condom on top of the magazines. Lavie was completely baffled as to what he planned to do with that. The only relief she felt was that at least the porn all featured women, so that meant he wasn't gay. She was, however, surprised to discover that Claus was less interested in boobs than with butts. Claus Valca was an ass man? Who knew!

Lavie quickly made up the beds and then ran into her room to collect her thoughts. She and Claus were growing up. They were no longer the innocent children that they once were. Technically they were still children in so far that they were only 17, but after all they had endured for so long, she felt mentally older. And she knew he did too. Especially in the past 2 years, where she and Claus were abruptly tasked with playing "happy families" with Alvis and Holly. Claus and Lavie went from raising each other to raising two younger children, and that endeavor had caused them both to mentally grow years ahead of their physical ages.

It was weird now, being in their home alone. With their charges both gone, Lavie realized that what had been slowly building since Claus came back injured from Prester was now coming to a head. Their relationship had matured and it was beginning to change. All they had to do was discuss it, to acknowledge it and acknowledge each other, and things would change drastically. Lavie had been so afraid for so long to talk to him about her feelings for so long because she felt she had been the only one to grow up into her strong attraction towards him. But as she reflected back on that hidden box underneath Claus' bed, she realized she wasn't the only one who had been growing up and maturing. He was as well. The comfortable stasis of their present relationship wouldn't last much longer, even if they both tried to will it to. She didn't know if he returned her feelings, but she did know that things could no longer remain as they were presently. Reflecting on that hidden box, she realized she needed to talk to him. Now. As terrified as she was to admit it, it was time for their previous relationship to end. It was time for the two of them to start over as something else, whatever that may be. So with a nervous sigh, Lavie stood up and walked out of her room to the kitchen, where she found him drying the last of the dishes from lunch.

"Claus?" She asked with trepidation as she walked over to the couch and sat down.
"Hm?" Claus responded, his eyes focused on the dishes in front of him.
"Can we talk?"
